Should the MTO not make wholesale prices public info if I have to pay taxes based on it’s values?

I want to buy a car privately. The Government of Ontario website says that the taxes owed on such a purchase are based on the sale price of the car or the Canadian Red Book wholesale value, whichever is greater. Should these wholesale values not be made available to the public for free? Or to put it another way, shouldn’t our taxes be providing this as a public service?

I have just read the info in mto.gov.on.ca and it was stated there if you got your car from a family or relative you will not pay the said tax but if you are oblige to pay it.

If something sells retail at $20.00 and the cost of manufacturing the product is $2.50, how much should the wholesale price be? Do I include shipping? Anyone a retail manager or buyer? How to set wholesale pricing?

I run an online business hand-silkscreening my designs onto garments. I have someone interested in stocking them in their shop, but they’re asking me what my Wholesale Pricing is.. I’ve never done this before, so I have no idea how to work out something fair.
I buy the blank dresses for around $10 each with shipping. This doesn’t include my time, ink or screen costs. I then print them and resell them for $22. Which means I make very little profit..
What sort of discount should I offer this buyer? She doesn’t want a lot of items, but I would really like to pursue this as it may lead to future sales.
Thanks!

Char,

Your wholesale price has to be your total cost plus an acceptable profit. If you aren’t making money, then it’s a hobby, not a business.

If the current price is $22, and you are making little profit, then you’re already selling less than what your wholesale price should be, in my opinion.

The garment business tends to run 100% markup at retail. Shops sell half of their inventory at full price to break even, and then discount the rest… every dollar made after they’ve sold half is pure profit. This is why end of season sales at clothing stores can offer such large discounts.

You need to:

1) add up ALL of your costs (including your time) to produce the dresses
2) add a reasonable profit (10-15%) – that’s your wholesale price
3) add another 15-25% – that’s your retail price

Hope this helps, and good luck!

How do I buy supplies at wholesale prices?

I want to buy fabrics at wholesale prices, then use the materials to make stuff and sell it. I thought I could do that with a resale license, but it looks like I can only resell the materials according to the FAQ on the application for California. How do small businesses get a good deal on materials?

Unless you’re buying from jobbers, wholesale fabric minimums are typically quite high, usually at least 1000 yards per fabric and colorway.

You also need special manufacturing licenses in California: http://www.fashion-incubator.com/archive/apparel_manufacturing_in_california/ http://www.fashion-incubator.com/archive/studying_for_the_california_garment_exam/ http://www.fashion-incubator.com/archive/sewing_contractors_fabric_resources_in_california/
